What is The Roanoke River Landing Party?
On the cold night of February 1, 2001, The Roanoke River  Landing Party was born!  A group of local Washington County residents met for the first time to form an organization whose purpose is the education of the general public in regards to naval operations that occurred during the War Between the States.   Our group represents the Crews of the CSS Albemarle and the USS Miami, both playing large roles in War’s North Carolina coastal theater.  Members participate in a variety of living history demonstrations and battle reenactments focusing presenting an authentic, professional and historically correct impression of period Navy life.  Our group is an officially sanctioned division of the Washington County Historical Society, Inc.

Why Re-enact or Interpret Living History?

If you would ask this question to a group of living historians each would have a different answer.
Most find it a rewarding hobby that allows a person the opportunity to “see” through the eyes of people who both lived and fought during the War.  Interpreting living history also gives participants the chance to present to the public an informed and enlightened impression of the life of a sailor or soldier while in camp or aboard ship.

Living historians do not seek to glorify the conflict but attempt to gain a better understanding of life at that time by studying the arts and skills that would be lost to future generations as well as trying to understand sacrifices made sailors, soldiers and civilians at sea or on the battlefield.  Reenacting is about learning, teaching, making new friends and  having fun!

CSS Albemarle Replica Completed
The successful launch of the replica CSS Albemarle has been the subject of many news reports and newspaper articles.  Recently,  the story was picked up by AP (Associated Press), and was also mentioned in USA Today.  Museum attendance has doubled and the museum is now open 7 days a week for the remainder of the summer season.

         Who is Eligible to Join?
Anyone who has an interest in the Civil War Navy and a desire to portray a sailor in a living history environment is encouraged to join.  Our group accepts enlistees regardless of gender or race.  We do ask that all participants be older than eighteen years of age or be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian.  (The Roanoke River Landing Party does not tolerate discrimination by any of its members toward any religious or ethnic segment, or any organization that does likewise, nor any who advocate overthrowing the United States Government.)
